A male bull elk going to the river for a cool swim on a hot summer day. Their antlers can sometimes weigh up to a hundred pounds.

Hibernation Staion at dusk with patio lights on. Large driveway has parking for 3-4 cars with a gate on the left that opens for additonal trailers etc.
The Elk of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park spend most of their day browsing on grasses and fords in open meadows such as Ocanaluftee Visitor Center and the Cataloochee Vallley. Best to catch them at dusk or dawn when they are most active.
In 2001, elk were released in Cataloochee Valley as part of an experimental program to reintroduce elk back to the park. The herd can be seen regularly in the fields of the valley, especially early in the morning and evening hours. Do not approach!
